Open practical steps

Entry eligibility depends on your passport, purpose, stay and complete route. Treat official guidance as the source of truth.

Do this before you go

  1. Check current rules for your passport on the immigration authority or Chinese embassy website.
  2. Check every mainland entry, including a return from Hong Kong or Macao.
  3. Keep the required documents accessible and avoid non-refundable plans until eligibility is clear.

Something not working?

Does entering from Hong Kong change the rule?

Not by itself. Your passport, purpose, duration and route determine eligibility; check the full itinerary with an official source.

Different websites give different answers.

Use the latest official notice and ask the relevant embassy about your exact circumstances.

Ready when: I have checked an official source for my passport and full route.

Let’s work through it

Choose what you know, then describe the error in your own words. We may ask one follow-up question.

When AI is available, your message and recent replies are sent to Qwen in Beijing. Otherwise, you receive a labelled guide answer. Never include payment details, passwords or identity documents. We record task counts and your chosen outcome, not the message text.

Foreign visitors can submit an arrival card through the National Immigration Administration’s official online channel. The official service is free; avoid look-alike paid sites.

Do this before you go

  1. Check whether the arrival card applies to your entry and use the official channel at s.nia.gov.cn if completing it online.
  2. Keep your submitted details available for arrival.
  3. If needed, ask for the paper card at the port instead.

Something not working?

A site asks me to pay for the card.

Stop and verify the address against the National Immigration Administration’s official notice. Its online arrival-card service is free.

I cannot complete the form online.

Ask for a paper arrival card at the port and follow immigration staff instructions.

Ready when: I know the official online route or will complete the paper card at arrival.

Some foreign sites and apps, including Google services, may be unavailable on mainland Chinese networks. Ask your provider whether international roaming or a travel eSIM supports the services you need.

Do this before you go

  1. Check that your phone supports the plan and it explicitly covers mainland China. Ask the provider about its routing and access to your essential apps.
  2. Check activation, data, hotspot and SMS rules. Keep your regular number available if it receives payment verification codes.
  3. Download offline maps and translation packs; save hotel addresses, bookings and key documents offline.

Something not working?

Will a roaming eSIM make every app work?

No. Routing and access depend on the provider and plan. Confirm the services you need before purchase.

I have data but no SMS codes.

Many travel plans are data-only. Keep a number that can receive the codes you need.

Ready when: My plan, essential app access and SMS needs are confirmed, and key details are offline.

Set up Alipay first, then WeChat Pay if you want a second payment option. Card support, verification, fees and limits vary by account.

Do this before you go

  1. Install Alipay from your official app store and register with a number that can receive verification messages.
  2. Follow the current passport identity and international-card linking prompts in the app. Allow time for any photo, selfie or SMS checks it requests.
  3. Try a small payment after arrival. Keep a second payment app or physical card; carry a little RMB cash for a disruption, preferably in small notes.

Something not working?

My card will not link.

Check supported card types and cardholder details, then contact Alipay support or your card issuer with the exact error.

I cannot receive the SMS code.

Check the country code and whether your regular phone service can receive SMS abroad.

The linked card payment failed.

Read the specific error and check the app’s current identity and transaction limits. Ask about a different payment method and contact the provider or issuer.

Ready when: Alipay opens, my identity and payment method are ready, and I have another way to pay.

WeChat Pay can be a useful second option. Set up Alipay first if you plan to use both, then follow WeChat’s own verification flow.

Do this before you go

  1. Install WeChat from your official app store and create or recover your account.
  2. Open the payment setup and follow the current identity and international-card instructions.
  3. Review current limits and fees. Keep another working payment method and a small amount of RMB cash for an outage; cash change may be inconvenient at some counters.

Something not working?

The payment menu is missing.

Check the current official visitor instructions and app region/account settings; use official support for account-specific help.

My card is rejected.

Confirm the supported card type and contact your issuer if the verification was blocked.

Ready when: WeChat Pay is configured or I have consciously chosen another backup.

Keep a small amount of RMB as a backup if a mobile payment is unavailable.

Do this before you go

  1. Check with your bank whether your card can withdraw RMB at a compatible ATM and tell it about your travel.
  2. Carry a modest amount of RMB and keep it separately from your primary payment method.
  3. Before a purchase, ask which payment methods the seller accepts.

Something not working?

Will my foreign card work at every ATM?

No. Check the network logo, card eligibility and any fees with your bank before relying on a withdrawal.

My mobile payment is down.

Ask whether the seller accepts RMB cash or another card, and use your backup method.

Ready when: I have a payment fallback that I can actually use.

China-capable maps and Chinese place names reduce friction. Save what matters before you lose signal.

Do this before you go

  1. Install a map that supports mainland China from your official app store.
  2. Save your accommodation, arrival point and first-day destinations in Chinese.
  3. Download or screenshot essential addresses and metro exits for offline use.

Ride-hailing is easier when your account, payment and Chinese destinations are ready before you need a car.

Do this before you go

  1. Install or access Didi through an official app or supported mini-program and complete the requested setup.
  2. Save your hotel’s Chinese name, full address and front-desk number.
  3. Before confirming a ride, compare the destination name and map pin and note the pickup point.

Do this before you go

  1. Use 12306.cn or a licensed agent and enter your passport details exactly as shown.
  2. Carry the same physical passport used for booking to the station and follow the identity checks at entry and boarding.
  3. Arrive early at large stations and check the live departure board and current station guidance.

Hotels register foreign guests using passport details. National guidance says hotels should provide lawful reception without a separate foreign-guest qualification.

Do this before you go

  1. Bring your physical passport to check-in.
  2. Before booking, ask the hotel whether it can complete the required foreign-passport registration and confirm its current check-in process.
  3. Keep the hotel’s Chinese name and address available offline. See the Shenzhen hotel check-in records for practical examples.

Something not working?

A hotel says it cannot register my passport.

Ask for the specific registration issue and contact the booking platform or local tourism service for help. The national guidance does not create a separate foreign-guest qualification.

My passport is unavailable at check-in.

Contact the hotel before arrival about its registration process; bring the physical passport if possible.

Ready when: My passport and the hotel’s check-in details are ready.

ChinaLocal is not an emergency service. Keep the contacts you may actually need where they work without data.

Do this before you go

  1. Save 110 for police, 120 for ambulance and 119 for fire in mainland China.
  2. Save your accommodation, insurer, card issuer and embassy or consulate contacts.
  3. Keep a second offline copy and share your broad itinerary with someone you trust.

Something not working?

My phone is lost or stops working.

Use the offline copy or ask accommodation staff to help contact the relevant service and follow official account-recovery steps.

Can ChinaLocal contact emergency services?

No. For urgent help call the local service or ask a nearby person or staff member immediately.

Ready when: Emergency, accommodation and personal support contacts are available offline.

The M visa covers commercial and trade activities. Tourism (L), non-commercial exchange (F) and employment (Z) are different purposes; some passport holders may instead qualify for a visa-free business visit. Check your exact case.

Do this before you go

  1. Check your passport, purpose, nationality, application location, route and every mainland entry against the latest visa-centre or embassy instructions.
  2. If an M visa is required, ask the inviting organisation in China for its official letter. It commonly needs your name and passport number, purpose and relationship, arrival/departure dates, place of stay, inviter contact details, signature and organisation seal; local requirements may differ.
  3. Check the stay duration printed on your visa. If you need more time, ask the local exit-entry authority about an extension before your authorised stay ends; it is not automatic.

A fapiao (发票) is a Chinese tax invoice, distinct from a card slip or ordinary receipt. Say “fapiao” or “请开发票” (qǐng kāi fā piào, please issue a fapiao), rather than relying on the English word “invoice”.

Do this before you go

  1. Ask your finance team whether it needs a fapiao, an electronic air itinerary invoice, an ordinary receipt or other evidence, and exactly which purchaser name and tax details to use.
  2. Before paying hotels and restaurants, ask how to obtain a fapiao and keep the payment slip or folio as supporting evidence if your employer asks for it.
  3. For each transport purchase, check the relevant issuer’s application route promptly and save the original electronic file or paper document.
