How to Use Alipay in China as a Visitor

Set up Alipay first, then WeChat Pay if you want a second payment option. Card support, verification, fees and limits vary by account.

Do this before you go

  1. 01

Install Alipay from your official app store and register with a number that can receive verification messages.

  2. 02

Follow the current passport identity and international-card linking prompts in the app. Allow time for any photo, selfie or SMS checks it requests.

  3. 03

Try a small payment after arrival. Keep a second payment app or physical card; carry a little RMB cash for a disruption, preferably in small notes.

Is there a $500 Alipay limit for visitors?

We found no universal US$500 limit for every visitor account. Published government guidance describes a higher single-transaction ceiling for overseas visitors using supported mobile payments, but the amount available to you can depend on the app, identity checks, linked card and issuer. Before a large purchase, check the current limit in your own account and ask the provider or card issuer about a declined payment.

If something gets stuck

My card will not link.

Check supported card types and cardholder details, then contact Alipay support or your card issuer with the exact error.

I cannot receive the SMS code.

Check the country code and whether your regular phone service can receive SMS abroad.

The linked card payment failed.

Read the specific error and check the app’s current identity and transaction limits. Ask about a different payment method and contact the provider or issuer.

You’re ready when: Alipay opens, my identity and payment method are ready, and I have another way to pay.
