Phone numbers and verification codes for China visitors

The short answer
Plan separately for internet data and verification messages. A provider’s “Data Only” eSIM does not include calls or SMS; check the exact plan before relying on it for account codes.
The Ministry of Commerce says foreign visitors can bring a passport or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card to a China Telecom, China Mobile or China Unicom service branch to apply for a SIM. Plans differ by operator; ask about the available plan, calls, data and SMS service.
Follow the requirements in the app you are using. A local number or working data connection does not guarantee that account verification will succeed. Never share a verification code, password or identity image with ChinaLocal.
What to do
- List the apps you need and identify which phone number will receive their verification messages. Ask your home operator about receiving SMS and voice calls abroad, roaming activation and charges.
- Read your eSIM’s exact plan type before buying. Airalo’s help distinguishes Data Only from Data, Voice & Text; other providers must be checked against their own terms.
- If you want a local SIM, bring your passport to an operator service branch. As a preparation suggestion, bring the phone you will use and ask about compatibility, plan duration, SMS and cancellation.
- If WeChat’s SMS or voice code does not arrive, follow its in-app instructions, use its own Help / Feedback, and ask your mobile provider about delivery. ChinaLocal cannot check or activate your account.
- Save the Chinese names and addresses you need on this device before travel. Open the saved information before going offline and keep a fallback if external app sign-in is unavailable.
Local SIMs and data-only travel plans
MOFCOM’s SIM guidance names the three operators and the passport or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card. It does not guarantee a particular branch, price or 30-day tourist plan. Confirm the plan and any further checks with the operator. Bringing your phone is our practical suggestion, not an additional official document requirement.
Airalo’s own help says Data Only plans do not include calls or SMS. This is not a claim that all eSIMs are the same, or that every plan provides a Chinese phone number. A plan’s data service does not establish SMS delivery to the separate number used for your account.
WeChat registration and verification
WeChat may ask an existing user to help verify; follow the in-app instructions. If the SMS or voice code does not arrive, use WeChat’s own Help / Feedback and ask your mobile provider about message delivery.
We do not publish a fixed account age, bank-card requirement or verification quota for the assisting friend. The in-app requirements apply to your case; assistance does not guarantee acceptance. Do not pay an unknown person or share a code to complete verification.
AMap and Chinese details as a fallback
AMap’s official help describes local place and route favourites, with cloud sync after signing in. The linked help describes an older interface; follow the prompts in your installed version. It does not establish that every current search or navigation feature works without an account.
ChinaLocal’s Show Chinese / Show driver and Copy Chinese actions give you Chinese place details. Open map hands the location to AMap; whether it then requires a connection or sign-in is controlled by AMap. Prepare saved Chinese information before leaving a working connection.
Alipay and phone-number requirements
A Chinese mobile number is not a universal requirement for setting up visitor mobile payments. MOFCOM describes payment-app registration using a foreign or Chinese number and following the product’s prompts. Follow the requirements shown by the particular in-app service.
We do not list particular travel or bike-sharing services as requiring a Chinese number without an official rule for that service. Payment registration, an individual mini-program and a mobile provider’s SMS service are separate checks.
Common problems
Can I get a local SIM with my passport?
MOFCOM says foreigners can apply at operator service branches with a passport or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card. Ask the branch about available plans and checks; a fixed 30-day plan is not guaranteed.
Does a data-only eSIM receive SMS codes?
Airalo says its Data Only plans do not include calls or SMS. Check your exact provider and plan; receiving codes on your original number depends on that number’s service.
What if WeChat asks another user to verify?
WeChat may ask an existing user to help verify; follow the in-app instructions. We do not state fixed friend-account requirements or guarantee that a scan will succeed.
Does every Alipay service need a Chinese phone number?
A Chinese number is not a universal requirement for visitor payment setup. Follow the requirements in the particular service; this guide does not publish an unverified list of services needing +86.
