Shanghai Museum People’s Square: tickets and current exhibits

Last checked 2026-10-17 · ChinaLocal team

The short answer

Do not rely on older advice that says the Shanghai Museum on People’s Square is always free to walk into. Its current notice says that during the “On Top of the World Tree” exhibition, from 9 July 2026 to 14 November 2027, the People’s Square building shows no other exhibitions. Reserve in advance; overseas visitors may book and buy through Trip.com. Visitors with disabilities may enter free with a valid supporting document.

The museum lists the People’s Square address as 201 Ren Min Da Dao, with individual visitors entering at the South Gate on Wusheng Road. Published daytime hours are 09:00–17:00 (last entry 15:00); on announced day-and-evening dates, 09:00–21:00 (last entry 19:00). The museum is normally closed Mondays except national holidays. Check its official WeChat announcements for evening sessions and changes.

If you wanted the museum’s permanent galleries, the museum directs visitors to Shanghai Museum East at 1952 Century Avenue instead. The two buildings have different locations, opening patterns and admission rules.

What to do

  1. Decide whether you want the ticketed People’s Square special exhibition or the permanent displays at Shanghai Museum East. The museum’s current notice separates the two.
  2. Open the museum’s official People’s Square visit page and follow its current ticketing link or official WeChat mini-program. Select a date and session shown as available.
  3. If using a third-party channel mentioned by the museum, check that the listing names the correct building and special exhibition. This page links to the museum’s official information rather than to a generic city activity search.
  4. Keep the original valid identity document used for booking. The museum says overseas visitors enter through the South Gate individual-visitor passage after verification.
  5. Before travel, read the museum’s announcement for any evening opening, holiday exception or change in the last-entry time.

The 2026–2027 People’s Square change

The museum’s official announcement is specific: from 9 July 2026 through 14 November 2027, the People’s Square building is dedicated to “On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas.” It says no other exhibitions will be shown there during that period. Reserve in advance; overseas visitors may book through Trip.com, and visitors with disabilities may enter free with valid documentation. This supersedes older walk-in advice for ordinary galleries at that building.

Museum policies can change before 2027. Treat the dates and ticket status as checked facts on this page, not a permanent rule. If your travel date is outside the announced exhibition period, consult the museum’s new notice rather than extrapolating today’s rule.

Choose the right entrance and building

The People’s Square building is at 201 Ren Min Da Dao, Huangpu District. The museum identifies the South Gate on Wusheng Road for individual entry. Save the full Chinese name 上海博物馆(人民广场馆) and show staff the building name if a map offers multiple museum pins.

Shanghai Museum East is at 1952 Century Avenue in Pudong. The museum lists different general visiting information for that building, including its own closing day. If you planned to see permanent galleries, check East’s current displays and entry rules separately rather than buying a People’s Square special-exhibition ticket by mistake.

If a reservation page disagrees

The museum changed its official domain to shanghaimuseum.cn in September 2026 and announced that the old domain would be discontinued in 2027. Follow the current museum website and official WeChat information. If a reseller listing gives a different last entry, age rule or exhibition name, resolve the mismatch with the museum before paying.
